Abstract

575,819. Adjusting brakes. GIRLING, Ltd., and MACE, T. K. April 12, 1944, No. 6758. [Class 103 (i)] In brake shoe adjusting means wherein a wedge member engaged by the shoe ends is movable in a substantially radial slot in the back-plate of the brake to effect the adjustment, movement of the wedge member is effected by a cam rotatable on the wedge member and engaging a fixed abutment. As shown, inclined edges 14, 15 of the ends of the brake shoes 10, 11 engage similarly shaped slots in a cylindrical head 18 provided with a stem 19 having a non-circular part slidable in a radial slot 20 in the back-plate 13. Adjustment of the head 18 in the slot is effected by a cam 21 rotatably mounted on the stem 19 and engaging a stud 22 fixed on the back-plate. The head and cam are clamped in position by a nut 24. The cam may be turned by a finger-piece 25 or by a key or a C-spanner adapted to engage holes or a notch in the cam, or it may have a hexagonal part for engagement by a spanner. The slot instead'of'being radial may be inclined to compensate for unequal wear of the shoe linings.
