Abstract
575,786. Machinery guards. CARTER, C. R., and ATKINS, F. E. March 30, 1944, No. 5863. [Class 80 (iv)] Relates to guard and safety devices of electrically-driven stock-bar lathes and other machine tools provided with a reciprocable feed tube and a guide tube for the stock. A guard 12, Figs. 1, 3, is secured to the detachable top plate (not shown) of the head-stock so that the two can be swung upwardly to allow of setting up. At the rear end of the guard is a double tubular-like part 13 with annular opening 14 to receive the adjacent end 15, Fig. 3, of the guide tube 16, Figs. 6, 8, or a part 22 thereon. Into this annular opening projects a spring-loaded ball 17, Fig. 5, which is pushed back when the guide tube is inserted to close a switch 18 in the motor circuit. The guide tube is slidably mounted in a support 31 which can turn about a vertical axis. The end 15 of the guide tube, Fig. 3, has offset V-notches 23 to position the tube angularly to keep a rod 30, Fig. 8, in correct position, the notches coacting with rollers 24, Fig. 5, in the annulus 14. At the outer end of the guide tube is pivoted a closure disc 26, Figs. 6, 8, which is urged to closed position about its pivot 37 by a spring 27 and, when closed, a flat face 29 on the disc arm 28 permits a spring- pressed rod 30 to lie thereover. The other end of the rod 30 is urged by the spring 32 against the support 31. When the guide tube is withdrawn, the rod 30 moves relatively thereto away from the face 29, thereby releasing the disc 26. If the stock bar 41 when inserted projects beyond the end of the tube 30, Fig. 8, the disc 26 would be forced open, whereby the edge 39 of its arm would obstruct the rod 30 and prevent the guide tube from being slid back to engage the guard 12.
