Attachments for tapping.-In a machine tapholder adapted to be held in a turret or like the tap-holding socket a slotted at c is held against rotation in a casing b by a spring-pressed plunger d, the forward end of which is engaged by a bellcrank lever e. A second plunger g engages a. slot h in the casing, this slot being backed off at h' to allow rotation in one direction. When the forward movement of the casing is arrested, the socket is drawn forward by the engagement of the tap with the work until, when a predetermined depth is attained, the portion e' of the bell-crank lever engages the wall f<1> of an annular groove in the casing to force back the plunger d and allow the socket to rotate idly. The work is then reversed, the plunger g holding the socket stationary to effect the withdrawal of the tap.
