Abstract

564,878. Screwing - machines. CARR & NICHOLS, Ltd., NICHOLS, J. W., and ANDERTON, H. July 23, 1943, No. 12013. [Class 83 (iii)] In a rod screwing machine the stock C is held in a self-tightening eccentric clamp D<1> on the front of a carriage B mounted by V-groove anti-friction wheels on correspondingly formed edges of bars A<1>, A<2> extending between the head A and a support a. The clamp is operated by a handle D<2>. In operation the screwing die E driven by chain gearing from a motor in the casing M, feeds the carriage B until a lug on it sliding on a rod K contacts a stop k<1>, shifting the bar and rocking a lever F to open the die head. The clamp D<1> is then released and the carriage is returned till a second stop k<2> closes the die head. The clamp is closed by hand just before the stop k<2> is reached to retract the stock through the die head sufficiently to ensure that when the die head closes it will engage the previously threaded part to ensure continuity of thread.
