Abstract
13,798. Lanning, W. H. June 12, 1911, [Convention date]. Clutches, claw; gearing for stopping and starting machinery.-Relates to pivoted pawl clutches adapted for operation manually, or automatically after a predetermined interval, applicable to stamping - machines and power presses. A driving-pulley 2 has a recess 3, Figs. 1 and 4, in the sides of which are inclined holes 4 containing blocks 5 with which are adapted to engage a pawl 9 pivoted in a collar 7 keyed to the driven shaft 1. The pawl is pressed outwards by a spring - pressed pin 21 but is normally kept disengaged by a more strongly spring - pressed pin 22 carried by a cam member 11, Figs. 1, 4, and 5, which is adapted to slide longitudinally in dovetail slots in a fixed bracket 12. The cam has a slot 14 adapted to be engaged by a pin 16 sliding in the collar 7. A spindle 23 carried in the bracket 12 has an arm 26 operated by a rod 27 connected to the operating-treadle, and has a second arm 24 engaging between lugs 25 on the cam 11. The spindle 23 also carries a third arm 29, Fig. 8, adapted to engage a cam 30 formed on an adjustable member 31. The left-hand lug 25 is made short so that when the cam 11 has been moved to allow the pawl 9 to engage one of the blocks 5, the spindle is lifted against the action of a spring 28 by the cam 30 so as to clear the left - hand lug 25. The cam 11 may be then returned to disengage the clutch by the treadle, or by engagement of the slot 14 by the pin 16 during the rotation. The pin engages the end of the slot 14 at the end of the revolution to stop the driven parts positively. The member 31 may be so adjusted that the cam 30 does not raise the spindle 23, and the pin 16 may be held retracted by a screw 19, so that the machine may operate continuously.
