Abstract
23,151. Beugels, J. Oct. 14. Tapping.-In a nipple-tapping machine, the tap is fed quickly up to the work and more slowly while cutting. The tap spindle f is quickly fed forward by a shaft y carried by a slide e actuated by a cam d, and is quickly retracted by a spring. During cutting, the spindle is fed by a screw k thereon engaging a nut segment i carried by a lever h which is actuated by a cam v on a slide m, the slide simultaneously causing a clutch q to engage a pulley r to rotate the spindle through gearing t, u. The slide m is actuated in one direction by a cam n, and in the other direction by a spring which causes the clutch q to engage a reversely rotating pulley s. The lever h is pivoted between springs z on a shaft g. The work is held between fixed and pivoted jaws b, Fig. 5, and the pivoted jaw may be provided with ridges to prevent axial and transverse movement of the nipple.
