Abstract

20,485. Herbert, A., and Stubbs, E. Sept. 29. Lathes; feed- - motions.-In lathes and other machinetools in which the tool is fed towards the work by means of a screw, a multiple stop is provided on the feed device so that the tool may be stopped at any number of predetermined places, and the complete series of operations may be exactly repeated as often as may be required. The hand-wheel b operating the feed carries a sleeve a mounted on an internal sleeve e c which carries an internally - toothed or serrated ring e, the teeth f of which are adapted to be engaged by similar teeth on a block h ; the block slides in a groove g and is carried by an eccentric shaft j which may be rotated to couple or uncouple the parts a and c by means of a knob k which is normally held stationary by the spring n causing it to engage the pin l. The sleeve a carries a number of disks o, o<1>, o<2>, o<3> each having a tooth or a notch q ; these disks may be clamped to the sleeve a by means of spring-pressed plungers p carried by the sleeve, each of which may be operated to clamp a disk when it has been adjusted by screwing in a screw r which permanently holds the plunger. A pawl s carried by some fixed part of the machine may be brought to engage any one of the disks, and as the tool is fed forwards the pawl s engages a notch q and stops the feed. The device may beadjusted to compensate for the wear of the tool without the disks being readjusted by turning the shaft j in the appropriate direction, whereby the resultant motion of the block h with respect to the sleeve a causes angular motion between the sleeve a and the sleeve c.
