Abstract

113,321. Lane, E. J. Feb. 17, 1917. Vices.-In a vice or work-holder for machine tools, such as planing and shaping machines, lathe face-plates &c., the work is held between three or more narrow jaws or centres carried by dogs movable in grooved housings. In the arrangements shown two dogs 6 are adjustable in a groove 2 in the bad-plate and a third dog 16 is mounted in a housing 14, which is adjustable on the bed-plate, and has two pawls 36 engaging ratchet teeth 13 on the bed-plate. The pawls 36 are preferably of the plunger type, as shown, and can be raised by handles 28. The housing 14 can be set obliquely to the centre line of the bed-plate and is clamped by a bolt with a capstan nut 23. The dogs 6 are split and furnished with a screw for clamping the centres 7, the points of which are eccentric to permit adjustment by rotation, while the dog 16 is furnished with a screw centre 18. Preferably the dogs are mounted in the grooves as shown, a cylinder 4 of hardened steel riveted to each dog engaging a recess in the groove. Dogs mounted in the manner shown in independent grooved housings may be used on the bed-plates of machines or on lathe face-plates.
