Abstract

18,429. Royle, V. Sept. 12. Planing and shaping; tools and tool-holders; feed-motions; workholders.-Relates to hand machines for lining the edges of photo-engravure and other plates. Parallel with the side of the bed 4, on which the plate to be lined is supported, is a guide-bar 5 carried by brackets 6, 7. On this bar slides a sleeve 8 formed with a transverse sleeve 9 carrying the shank 10 of a cutter-head 11. The head 11 is formed with a diagonal recess for the tool 13 which is clamped by a segmental piece 14 and screw 16. The depth of cut is regulated by a shoe 18 through which the cutter projects. This shoe is carried by a shank 19 adjustable by a nut 20, and is prevented from rotating by a pin 22. The cutter head is prevented from rotating in the sleeve 9 by a pin 17. The distance of the cutter from the edge of the plate is regulated by a micrometer arrangement comprising a screw 23 engaging the shank 10 and a sleeve 25 screwed to engage the screwed end 27 of the sleeve 9. The boss of the sleeve 25 is engaged between a shoulder 24 on the screw 23 and a head 29 splined to rotate with the screw. A nut 31 is provided for clamping the head 29 and sleeve 25 so that they and the screw 23 move together. On slacking the nut 31, the screw 23 may be turned to place the tool at any desired zero position, and after tightening the nut 31, the tool may be set from this zero position by turning the screw 23 and sleeve 25 together, a graduated scale 32 being marked on the sleeve 25 to assist in this operation. The threads of the sleeve 25 and screw 23 are preferably of different pitches. In order to lift the tool when a particular point on the plate has been reached, an adjustable piece 33 having a bevelled end 34 is provided on the frame, and a bevelled nut 40 adjustable on a screw screwed into the shank 9. The engagement of the nut with the piece 33 lifts the tool. The plate to be lined is held at the edge adjacent to the tool by means of a spring clamping-strip 48, secured to a narrower distance-strip 47 by a strip 49 and screws 50. The edge of the plate is pushed under the spring strip 48, until the latter engages the shoulder at the top of the bevel of the plate. To hold the plate in the direction of movement of the cutter, a slotted stud 51 is provided resting in a socket in the bed 4.
