A screwing or tapping attachment comprises a non-rotatable part J to be mounted on a machine, an axially-movable tool shaft A, means B, B<SP>3</SP> for coupling the part J and shaft together during screwing, an inner rotatable member C around the shaft, an outer member G concentric with and connected by speed-increasing gearing E<SP>1</SP>, E<SP>2</SP>, to the inner member, means K on the outer member engageable with the rotating work or holder to rotate member C faster than the work, and means B<SP>1</SP> on the shaft A, engageable with means B<SP>2</SP> on the inner member when screwing is complete, to cause rotation of the tool in the same direction but at a higher speed, thus withdrawing the tool.
