Abstract
575,710. Billet-heating furnaces. MCDONALD, J., and G.W.B. ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd. March 20, 1944, No. 5181. [Class 51 (ii)] In a billet-heating furnace the billets are carried through the furnace by a conveyer on which they are arranged longitudinally of the furnace and substantially the whole of the circumferential surfaces are subjected to a current of hot air or gases moving in the opposite direction to the billets, the air or gases being withdrawn near the inlet of the furnace and passed through a heating-duct separate from the furnace chamber and leading into it near the exit end. As shown in Fig. 1, the billets 1 are pushed through the furnace on one or more tracks formed by concave rollers 2. At the entrance end of the furnace one or more fans 6 withdraw air and pass it through a duct 8 where it is heated by electric or other heating means 9, the heated air entering the exit end of the furnace between guides 11. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the billets are carried through the furnace on conveyer chains comprising pairs of side plates 12, 13 with which the billets make line contacts.
