Abstract
989,713. Continuous heat treatment furnaces. W. BECKER. April 9, 1964 [April 29, 1963], No. 14759/64. Heading F4B. A continuous furnace in which coils of steel strip A are conveyed in succession through preheating, heating and cooling stations has hubs B carrying the coils and supported by wire loops C suspended from carriages G running rollers I engaging an I-beam K, the hubs being engaged at the heating stations by journals P of driving shaft N by which the coils are rotated to give uniform heating. The carriages G have a set of teeth L on each side of the web of beam K engaging driver chains and the beam K is lowered by bell cranks to release the loops C prior to engagement of the hubs B by the shafts N. A protective gas circulates continuously between a preheating station, Fig. 9, and an initial cooling station, Fig. 8, urged by a fan T below pipes S in the cooling zone into ducts W, returning from the preheating zone through upper ducts U. The heating station, Fig. 7, is heated by gas fired radiant tubes R or by electric resistances 8 one or more additional cooling stations may be provided at the outlet end of the furnace, Fig. 10 (not shown). Each end of the furnace has an air lock with an outer door, Fig. 9 (not shown), and externally operated double doors separate each station and the final stations from the air lock.
