Abstract
1,154,614. Conveying furnace charges. PULLMAN Inc. 17 June, 1966 [24 June, 1965], No. 27283/66. Heading F4B. In a kiln 10, for firing ceramic ware, having a roller conveyer extending therethrough, each roller 32 passes through apertures 24 in the side-walls 34, 36 of the kiln, each projecting end 38 resting in two driven roller members 42 and each projecting end 40 resting on two idling rollers 54. The shafts 44 of rollers 42 are Journalled within the roll housing 46, and their outer ends carry sprockets 48 engaging an endless chain 50 which is driven by chain reduction through sprockets, 51, 68, and 70 and a chain 72 by a motor 52. A spring biased idler roll 64 may be provided to increase frictional engagement between the rollers 32 and 42. The rollers 32 which are ceramic in the hottest zones but may be metallic in the cooler zones, have spherical bearing surfaces 60, 62 at their ends, which if the rollers are axially displaced rub against retainers 56 and 58. The retainers 56 and 58 are removable to allow broken rolls to be quickly replaced. The kiln chamber is heated by burners in the side walls and baffles are provided at the entrance and exit to reduce heat loss (Fig. 1).
