Abstract
575,475. Chemical heating compositions. GILLIES, J., CALDWELL, W. A., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 27, 1943, No. 1368. [Class 64 (ii)] [Also in Group II] A composition for a chemical immersion heater for foodstuffs comprises a mixture of silicon and iron oxide, which may be ferrosoferric oxide, ferric oxide, or hammerscale, compacted under a pressure of 3-8 tons per sq. in. The reaction may be accelerated by the addition of calcium silicide or aluminium. A priming composition consisting of calcium silicide and red lead, cupric oxide, or manganese dioxide, may be used, superposed on the heating composition. The iron oxide used may be obtained from the sludge formed in the production of aniline by the reduction of nitrobenzene with iron in the presence of an acid. The sludge is roasted to dry it and remove organic residues. Specifications 575,476 and 575,506, [both in Group XXI], are referred to.
