Abstract

575,396. Oil-break switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and NUNN, C. H. March 15, 1944, No. 4807. [Class 38 (v)] In oil-immersed electrical switchgear a baffle is immersed in the oil above the contacts to collect fluid projected upwards by the arc to prevent its passing immediately through the oil to the insulators immersed in it and there depositing newly-generated carbon. Such carbon is stated to be " active " and readily attracted to surfaces of insulators with resulting deleterious action, while carbon which has had time to lose its active property does not so readily deposit. In an on-load tap-changing switch the baffle is a tube 30 fixed by a cross bar 32 to a frame 14 carrying conductors 10, 11 in bushings 12, 13, having a diameter approximately one-third of the distance between the centres of the conductors 10, 11 and extending from just above the contacts 16, 17 to shortly below the surface of the oil. Contacts 16, 17 are resiliently mounted on pivoted rockets 18, 19 moved respectively by links 29, 28 when a lever 27 is rocked by movement of an actuating rod 25 with an insulating portion 26. Connection is made to the contacts 16, 17 by flexible conducting strips 23, 24.
