Abstract
695,032. High-voltage switches. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Aug. 8, 1951 [Nov. 16, 1950], No. 28068/50. Class 38 (v) In a switch, particularly an air or gas-blast switch, employing resistance-switching in conjunction with a series isolator or "sequence" switch, the resistanceswitching resistor is adapted to provide grading of the voltage along the length of the insulating bushing or other member insulating the contacts when opened from each other. In Fig. 1, the resistor 10 is connected to and supported between a metal housing 4 to which the movable contact 2 is connected by spring-loaded contact members 7, and a terminal member 13 carried on the end of the insulating bushing 9 surrounding the fixed contact 1. The resistance 10 is in two parts, the adjacent ends of the parts being in contact with a conducting member 16, which forms a potentiometer tapping and is connected to a conducting tubular ring 17 supported by spokes 18 from a conducting ring 19 clamped around the insulator 9. When the contacts 1, 2 are opened and current is flowing through the resistor 10, the potential of the rings 17, 19 is maintained at a value between those of contacts 1, 2. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) illustrate a similar arrangement as applied to a switch in which a cylindrical insulator encloses the arcing chamber and extends between contact-carrying terminal members.
