Abstract
575,194. Sewing-machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). March 2, 1944, No. 3946. [Class 112] [Also in Group XXV] The needle-avoiding movement of a looper, particularly for a two-needle machine in which the looper is always parallel to a fixed plane, is produced by mechanism including a very short pitman so that the loop-taking movement of the looper is substantially straight and 'the looper can thus move very close to the needles. In the form shown, looper' carrier 20 is carried by a sleeve 21 slidable and rotatable on a fixed rod 22 and is oscillated by a pitman 34 driven by an eccentric 35 on the main shaft 17 and engaging a ball-ended arm 30 clamped on the sleeve 21. It is formed with an arcuate slot 50. through which passes a rod 44 which slides in a bearing (not shown) and is reciprocated by a second eccentric on the shaft 17 through a very short pitman; collars 49 on the rod 44 fit closely against the sides of the looper-carrier 20 so that the latter is reciprocated laterally with the sleeve 44. Lubricating.-Lubricant from a bearing 15 of the shaft 17 passes along a duct in the latter to the two eccentrics and from the eccentric 35 through ducts in the pitman 34, ball arm 30 and rod 22 to the bearing surfaces on the latter. The duct in the rod 22 is also fed by a duct in the machine frame from the bearing of the sliding rod 44. Ball joints.-The bearing-surface of the eccentric 35 is spherical, and the ball-ended arm 30 has an extension 32 engaging a fork 37 fixed on the pitman 34 to prevent any movement of the latter about its own axis.
