Abstract

20,677. Johnson, L. E. Jan. 10. Boot-sole sewing-machines; feed by awl; needle-shields.-In sewing-machines, and particularly in boot and shoe sewing-machines, the awl and the needle are mounted in the same vertical plane on the same support. Adjustable means is also provided to move the frame carrying such support while the awl is in the work. The shaft 80, Fig. 4, upon which the needle and awl are mounted is carried in a frame 62, studs 60, 61 on which slide in bearings in the main frame 22. The frame 62 is oscillated by a cam 27 through a lever 64 provided with a fulcrum, which is adjustable to vary the length of stitch. The lever 64 is slotted and embraces a fulcrum block 68 carried by a member 69 having a shank 70 extending through a straight slot 71 in the frame 22. The position of the member 69 is adjusted by a hand-lever 73. The needle 84, Fig. 5, and awl 911 are carried by a support 85 on a sleeve 86* on the shaft 80. The support 85 is oscillated by a segmental gear 86, operated from a grooved cam. The needle shield 83 is mounted on the shaft 80, at the other end of which is a collar 81, Fig. 3. controlled by a spring 82. As the needle support 85 oscillates, the needle shield is carried round until the projection 81* comes into contact with a fixed stop 811. Specification 775/14 is referred to.
