Abstract

115,032. United Shoe Machinery Co., (Assignees of Topham, L. E.). April 16, 1917, [Convention date]. Boot-sole sewing-machines; feed by awls, needles, and presser-feet; stitch separating and indenting; fair-stitching; welting and turnshoe. - In outsole sewing-machines, the devices for engaging and operating on the work, comprising a needle, an awl, a worksupporting table, and a presser-foot, are in proper sequence moved in the direction of the feed whenever actively engaging the work and are returned while idle and while one or more of the other elements are engaged in continuing the feed, with the object of obtaining a continuous feed of the work and minimizing the strain on the feeding elements and the work. The invention is described as applied to an outsole sewing-machine in which the work-engaging and stitch-forming devices are of usual construction. The awl, Figs. 2 and 10, is mounted on the segment 22 oscillating on a stud 24 in the post 26 which also carries the work-support 18 and is carried by the slide 28. The slide is oscillated to give feeding movements to the awl and work-support by a lever 30 adjustably connected to a cam-actuated lever. The segment 46 carrying the needles 4 is mounted to oscillate between collars 52 on a stud 48 which is reciprocated in the line of feed bv a lever 54 connected adjustably to a cam-actuated lever. The presserfoot 20 is carried by a lever formed in two sections 61, 62 connected together for rocking movements but having relative movement in the line of feed. The part 61 is formed with a yokemember 72 between the lugs of which is fixed a bar 78 passing through a bearing 68 on which is mounted the boss 64 of the part 62. Flat bearing surfaces on the yoke 72 and boss 64 transmit the rocking movements between the parts. The member 61 is reciprocated in the line of feed by a link connecting the ballstud 90 to an arm 96 on a shaft 98 which is rocked through the arm 100 by the same cam as actuates the slide 28 carrying the awl and work-support. The timing of the parts is such that some of the work-engaging devices are in active engagement with the work and are moving in the direction of the feed at all times during each cycle, and the return movement of each device takes place during the active feeding movement of one or more of the other devices. Overlapping of the feeding movements of the devices is provided and preferably each device is brought up to substantially the speed of the feed before it actively engages the work. When used, an edge gauge 130, Fig. 7, is carried by a shaft 132 mounted in the post 26. The lower end of the shaft is provided with worm gear 134 engaged by a worm on a shaft 138 which is rocked by a disk 140, Fig. 2, secured thereon and having shoulders 142, 144 alternately engaged by a finger 146 on a plate 148 secured to the lever 30. A fudging tool 152 is carried on a block 154 which is mounted in a recess in the edge of the post 26 and is threaded on the shaft 132, the rocking of which reciprocates the tool. The depth of the cut may be adjusted by turning an eccentric sleeve 156 which connects the tool to a stud on the block. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes the invention as applied to inseam sewing machines. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
