To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN S. FREESE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button -Hole Sewing -Ma chines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom panying drawings.
Thisinvention relates to button-hole sewingmachines; and it consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims, the whole being illustrated in the accompanying d rawings, in which Figure 1 is an inverted plan view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section in the line at as, Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4L, 5, 6, 7, and S are detail views of parts. Fig. 9 is a longitudinal section showing the machine and its attachments.

The letter A designates the feed-wheel, having a central hole, 13, to accommodate the looper C. This loopcr is of a character used on a \Villcox & Gibbs SeWingmiachine, it cooperating with the needle 0 to produce the stitch, by means of a single thread, in a wellknown manner, the needle being mounted in the usual bar, G, working in a carrier, 0", to which a vibrating motion laterally with respect to the path or line of feed is imparted from a cam-disk, U, through the medium of a rod, U, the disk being mounted on a drivingshai't, G, which also is geared with the needlebar-operating shaft V, having its hearings in the machine'arm W. In the example shown the connection of the needlebar with the operating-shaft V is effected by means of a link, V, one end of which is connected to the needle-bar and the other end to an eccentric wristpin mounted on a disk, V, of the operating shaft, so that by the joint action of this shaft and the needlc-bar carrier a vertically-reciprocating and laterally-vibrating motion is imparted to the needle.
The letter D indicates the shaft carrying the loopcr. This shaft D is mounted in its bearings in such a manner that it is capable of longitudinal motion as well as a revolving mo tion, and in a right line therewith is arranged a second shaft, F, which is auxiliary thereto (No model.)
and is geared to the driving-shaft G, as by means of bevelwheels H, Fig. 2, to receive a revolving motion.
The letter I designates a sleeve, which is fixed to the looper-shaft D and is keyed to the auxiliary shaft F, as by means of a spline, a, so that this sleeve is capable of sliding on the au xiliary shaft, while it is a medium for transmitting the motion thereof to the looper-shaft. To this sleeve I is connected an operating lever, J, which engages a groove of the camwheel Kin such a manner that a longitudinally reciprocating motion is thence imparted to the sleeve, together with the looper-shaft, by means of the operating-lever, and it will be readily understood that in the compound motion thus imparted to the loopcr-shaft the looper preserves the proper relation to the needle in the throw thereof to catch the loop of needle-thread. The connection of the op crating-lever J with the sleeve I is effected by means of a link, a, which is secured in a slot, w, of the lever by means of a set-screw, 3 so that such connection is adjustable and the longitudinal motion of the looper-shaft can be varied to correspond with the throw of the needle.
The letter L designates a feed-dog, which engages a circular groove, d, of the feed-wheel by means of a laterallyproject-ing frictionwhich receives its motion fromthe cam-wheel K through the medium of the lever O. This lever engages a second groove of the camwheel. The feed-lever O is provided with two cams, P Q, one of which is fixed thereto, {as by means of set-screws a, while the other is movable, it being fitted into guides g of the lever, as shown in Fig. 3. Either of the cams l? or Q of the feed-lever is adapted to act di rectly on the feed-dog, and the lobe of one cam is of a different shape from the other, so that when the cams are interchanged, as next explained, the throw of the feed-dog is varied and the motion of the feedwheel is regulated to suit the button-holcthat is to say, the feedwheel receives a more rapid motion in stitching the ends or corners of the buttonhole than in stitching the sides or intermediate portions thereof.
The letter B denotes a shiftinglcver, which engages the movable cam Q, of the feed-lever,
pawl, N, hereinafter more fully described, and
and which is of such shape that when it is set to one position the movable cam is thereby brought into play, as shown in Fig. 1, while when it is set to another or reverse position the movable cam is set free, and it yielding to the resistance offered by the feed-dog, the other or fixed dog is brought into action.
' The adjustment of the shifting-lever R is effected by means of an operating-lever, S, which is connected to the shifting-lever by means of a link, It, and also connected with a camgroove, l, of the feed-wheel to receive an oscillating motion from such wheel.
The friction-pawl N of the feed-dog is fitted into grooved jaws T (see Figs.v 6, 7, and 8) on the forward end of the dog, it being held in position by a screw, m,or other suitable means, and by this construction the pawl can be easily renewed when desirable, without affect ing the body of the dog.
I do not claim, broadly, the accomplishment of the co-operating movements of the needle and its connections and the looper and its connections.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with needle, the looper, and the looper-shaft, of a mechanism consisting of a horizontal shaft carrying a crankwheel and a link connecting said crank-wheel with the needle-bar, for imparting to the needle a vertically-reciproeating motion, a mechanism consisting of a cam, U, and a connecting-rod, U, connecting said cam-wheel with the needle'carrier, forimparting to the needle a lateral1y-vibrating motion, and a mechanism consisting of the sleeve I, keyed shaft F, bent lever J cam-grooved wheel K, and gearing connected to vertical shaft H, for imparting to the looper'shaft a combined rotary and longitudinally-reciprocating motion, all substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the looper-shaft D, of the auxiliary shaft F, geared to receive a revolving motion, the sleeve I, fixed to the looper-shaft and keyed to the auxiliary shaft to slide thereon and transmit its motion to the looper-shaft, and the operating-lever J, connected to the sleeve for imparting thereto and to the looper-shaft a longitudinally-reciprocating motion. 7
3. The combination, with the feed-wheel having the circular groove d, of the feed-dog L, having its forward end provided with grooved jaws T, and the laterally=projecting friction-pawl N, fitted in said jaws of the dog to engage the circular groove of the feedwheel, and a means for imparting motion to the feed-dog, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination, with the looper-shaft, the looper-operating levers J, feed-lever O, feed-dog L, and feed-wheel A, of the camwheel K, common to both the operating-lever and the feed-lever.
5. The combination, with the feeddog and feed-lever, of the interchangeable cam P Q, arranged on the feed-lever and constructed to act directly on the feed-dog, substantially as and for the purpose described.
6. The combination of the looper shaft D,
i the auxiliary shaft F, the sleeve I, the looperoperating lever, and a means for adjustably connecting the sleeve to the operating-lever, substantially as and for the purpose described.
