[Also in Division D1] In a sewing machine a shaft 33, oscillated via a pitman 31 from a main shaft 26, carries a crank-pin 34 journalled in a link 35. One end of the latter is pivoted at 36 to an arm 37 pivoted at 38 on the machine frame. The other end of link 35 is pivoted at 40 to a sleeve 41 which carries the sewing needle and is slidable on a fixed rod 42. The arrangement is such that the axis of shaft 33 is positioned midway between the axis of rod 42 and a line parallel thereto and passing through the axis of pivot 38, while the distance between the axis of shaft 33 and the axis of crank-pin 34 is one-sixth of the distance between the axis of rod 42 and said line passing through the axis of pivot 38, while crank-pin 34 oscillates 30 degrees on each side of a line perpendicular to rod 42 and passing through the axis of shaft 33 and pivots 36 and 40. It is stated that in this arrangement the maximum deviation of sleeve 41 from straight line motion for a stroke of 25 mm. is 1.5 to 2 microns. Specification 950,568 is referred to.
