Abstract

575,173. Chlorine dioxide. MATHIESON ALKALI WORKS. Feb. 4, 1944. No. 2112. Convention date, Jan. 12, 1943. [Class 1 (ii)] In the production of chlorine dioxide by reduction of an alkali, alkaline earth metal or magnesium chlorate, the chlorate and a water soluble reducing agent in substantially theoretical proportion are intimately admixed with an excess of sulphuric acid. Aqueous solutions of chlorate and reducing -agents are preferably used and may be added simultaneously or after premixing. Removal of chlorine dioxide may be assisted by a current of inert gas such as air or nitrogen. As reducing agents alcohols, e.g., methyl, t-butyl alcohols or glycerine, aldehydes, e.g., formaldehyde or furfural, acids, e.g., formic or oxalic acids, and carbohydrates, e.g., dextrose, sucrose, molasses, starch, sorghum, or dextrine or its derivatives are specified. Substantially chlorine free chlorine dioxide is obtained by using chlorate free from chloride. Examples of operation are given.
