Abstract

575,095. Compound armour plate. WARBURTON, H., and FULLER, H. Aug. 28, 1941, No. 10990. [Class 72] [Also in Groups XXII and XXXIII] Compound armour plate comprises an inner layer of hardened metal resistant to penetration bonded to and between two or more outer layers of toughened metal having separate structural formation. The inner layer may consist of a steel containing up to 4 per cent chromium, nickel and chromium, or nickel, chromium and molybdenum, whilst the outer layer may consist of steel containing 10-12 per cent manganese. The front outer layer is tougher than the rear outer layer which should be machinable to receive securing studs or rivets. The outer layers may be cast on to an inner layer preformed with recesses in its surfaces to facilitate bonding, or separately formed layers may be united by a bonding material. The compound bodies so formed are treated mechanically, as by forging and rolling, to reduce them into slabs or plates in which the outer layers are not more than two inches thick. These slabs or plates are then heated to about 800‹-900‹ C. and quenched in cold water, water glass, or other liquid, so as to harden the inner layer, and toughen the outer layers, simultaneously.
