Abstract

574.756. Actuation of switches. IGRANIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WRIGHT, S. R. Feb. 15, 1944, No. 2815. [Class 38 (v)] An electric switch is operated by the differential response of two bellows to fluid pressures in different parts of a pneumatic or hydraulic system. Two bellows 7, 8, mounted on block 15 which also carries fulcrum 12 of lever 11, carry pointed studs 9, 10 engaging adjustable studs 23, 24 on the lever 11 which is rotated to make or break contacts 13, 14 according as bellows 7 or 8 prevail. Fluid pressure is transmitted to the bellows through pipes 21, 22 from opposite sides of a gate valve 2, across which is a byepass 3 with cock 4. To obviate difficulty in opening the valve caused by high pressure on the right hand side, the byepass is opened to equalize pressures, and the switch, open until then, now closes. Bellows 7 is larger or further from the fulcrum than bellows 8 so that the switch is closed with equal pressures. The closing of the switch may give a visible indication of the pressure equalization or enable automatic opening mechanism such as an electric motor to operate. The device may be used in welding apparatus having an air operated electrode head.
