Abstract
540,321. Fluid-actuated valves. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BLANDFORD, A. R., and ROWLAND, F. G. May 13, 1940, No. 8592. [Class 135] A valve device particularly applicable to the control of the compressed air operation of electric switch gear such as air-blast circuit breakers or a combination of such a circuit-breaker with an isolating switch and actuated by the application of fluid pressure to a piston or the like is provided with means whereby fluid pressure is permitted to leak to the back of the piston when the valve is open and so facilitate its closure. In the arrangement shown compressed air from a reservoir 1 passes to an outlet conduit 4 when a valve 2 is opened against the action of a spring 8 by the admission of fluid pressure from the reservoir to the upper side of the piston 7 under the control of the valve (not shown). When the valve 2 is open air leaks through apertures 10, which may be adjustably throttled, to the underside of the piston to build up a pressure to assist the spring 8 in closing the valve 2 when the control valve is operated to connect the control conduit 9 to atmosphere. An auxiliary piston 11 subject to the pressure in the outlet chamber 3, may after a pre-determined interval, act either mechanically or through air pressure or electromagnetic means to actuate the same or a second control valve to initiate the reclosing of the main valve.
