Abstract
574,413. Aircraft wings. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. April 13, 1939, No. 11265. [Class 4] An aircraft wing has a central part provided with a stress-resisting frame of ring form in plan, the circular space within which is entirely free from bracing so as to accommodate a rotatable gun turret or afford space for cargo, fuel tanks, equipment or passengers. The frame comprises a ring 16 of box section to whichare secured main spars 10, 12 and a subsidiary spar 14. The ribs and spars may extend through the annular space or it may be free of bracing. The central space 18 is, in either case, kept free and may be covered by a member conforming to the contour of the wing or by a domed cupola extending to the outer edge of the ring. Modifications are described in which a single wide spar in each wing is secured to the central ring, or two spars in each wing may be secured to the ring approximately tangentially. The ring may be of I-section instead of box section.
