Abstract
170,727. Mooney, D. J., and Brown, E. E. Aug. 23, 1920. Struts.-Cross stiffeners for spars &c. for aircraft are made of thin metal, which is bent in such a way that the stiffeners have curved or bent backs and fit the shape of the spars &c., and the metal is not drawn or stretched. A metal blank shown in Fig. 1 is bent along the dotted lines and produces a stiffener, shown in elevation and side view in Figs. 2 and 3, having a convex back d. Stiffenens with concave or other backs may be produced in a similar manner from differently-shaped blanks. Fig. 16 shows a spar consisting of upper and lower channels f connected together by bent stiffeners c. Other spars are described with side members which are stiffened by members c either inside, as in Fig. 19, or outside, as in Fig. 21.
