734,491. Launching and landing aircraft. ANDERSON, J. R. April 7, 1952 [April 18, 1951], No. 9062/51. Class 4. [Also in Group XXI] A launching or landing device for aircraft which take off and/or land vertically or substantially vertically, is provided with a member or cradle which permits freedom of angular movement of the axis of the aircraft when launching or landing. In Fig. 1, member 1 is inside the fuselage to which it is pivoted by internally projecting pivots 3. Pivots 4 attached to the member engage yokes 5 on pillars 6. Part of the latter may be. swung aside to give clearance when manoeuvring to land. In a modification the pillars consist of two pairs of telescopic legs which may be retracted into the aircraft when in flight. In Fig. 2, member 1 is outside the fuselage. In a modification, the member is a split ring, enabling the aircraft to enter laterally. In a further modification, member 1 depends from its pivots by vertical lugs and has upstanding yokes bearing pivots 4. Specifications 568,548, 612,880, 612,881 and 629,460 are referred to.
