Abstract

573,945. Coupling welding rods. GLADWIN, F. L. Dec. 22, 1943, No. 21501. [Class 61 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] For use with welding machines employing flux-coated welding electrode rods and for securing a fresh rod to the rod 13 being used up by means of a screw stud 14 with washer 15 interposed between the meeting ends of the rods, pliers are provided with insulating handle sleeves 18 and with an auxiliary guide or jaws 19 and retaining springs 23 for holding a washer 15 in position over the screw stud 14, the end of the rod being gripped by the plier jaws 16, while another electrode rod is screwed on; the pliers and auxiliary jaws can then be removed sideways from the rod and washer. A magazine 20 may be provided for holding a supply of the washers which can be fed to the jaws 19, one by one, by a pusher 21. The modified device of Fig. 5 has in addition supporting sleeves 25 slidable on posts 26 provided on the welding machine casing 24 and the pliers are mounted for lateral sliding movement by means of a pin 28 thereon engaging a slot 29 in the support plate 27.
