Abstract

573,517. Spring and weight applied brakes. ELLISTON, E. R. Oct. 14, 1943, No. 16902. [Class 103 (i)] In brakes in which the brake is applied by a spring or weight and is released by a magnet or other power unit, the braking pressure is adjusted by the provision of a second spring or weight against which the application spring or weight acts and which is adjustable. The brake shown comprises a lever 10 pivoted on a brake shoe 1 and connected by linkage 6, 7, 8 to the plunger 4 of a magnet 2. The lever 10 is connected at 15 to a rod 16 slidable in the upper part of the shoes and on one end of which and on a lug 20 on the shoe 1 bears the application spring 18. A second spring 21 bears on the shoe 1 and on adjusting nuts 24 carried by a tubular member 22 slidable on the rod 16 and abutting by its end 23 on the shoe 1a. The spring 21 thus holds the shoes apart when the brake is released and when the brake is applied by de-energizing the magnet acts in opposition to the spring 18 to a degree dependent upon the adjustment of the nuts 24. The effort of the spring 21 may be adjustable from zero up to a value that is equal and opposite to that of the spring 18. The shoes may be moved towards each other to compensate for wear by adjustment of the nuts 26 on the rod 16, the usual adjustable stop 14 being provided for the shoe 1. The spring 18 or both of the springs may be replaced by weight devices. An electrohydraulic thruster power unit may be used instead of a magnet.
