Abstract

Condensation products resistant to mineral oil and suitable when mixed with fillers, pigments, &c. for use as adhesives, are obtained by condensing rubber with maleic acid and one or more monohydric alcohols in presence of an organic peroxide catalyst at temperatures between 70 DEG and 150 DEG C. The reaction may be carried out in presence of organic solvents, e.g. benzene, xylene, tetralin, ethyl, butyl or hexyl alcohol. Crepe rubber dissolved in benzene is condensed with maleic anhydride in presence of ethyl alcohol and benzoyl peroxide. Specifications 507,996, 535,889 and 541,167 are referred to.
