Abstract

The invention comprises 2-keto-10-methyl-1,2,5,8,9,10 - hexahydronaphthalene and its preparation by reducing an organic carboxylic ester of 1 - hydroxy - 2 - keto - 10 - methyl - 1,2,5,8,9,10 - hexahydronaphthalene with zinc in acetic anhydride or an organic solvent at raised temperatures. Subsequent condensation with ethyl formate produces 1-hydroxymethylene - 10 - methyl - 2 - keto - 1,2,5,8,9,10-hexahydronaphthalene which may be converted to 1 - aldehydo - 1 - (b -propionethyl) - 2 - keto - 10 - methyl - 1,2,5,8,9,10 - hexahydronaphthalene by condensation with ethyl vinyl ketone in the presence of an alkaline condensing agents such as potassium t.-butoxide.
