Abstract
The invention comprises 1,4-dihydroxy-2-methoxy - 10 - methyl - 1,4,5,8,9,10 - hexahydronaphthalene and its preparation by the reduction of trans - 2 - methoxy - 10 - methyl - 5,8,9,10 - tetrahydro - 1,4 - naphthoquinone with lithium aluminium hydride. The dihydroxy compound on treatment with a dilute mineral acid yields 1-hydroxy-10-methyl-2-keto-1,2,5,8,9,10-hexahydronaphthalene which may be esterified with a carboxylic acid, e.g. acetic anhydride in pyridine. Specification 712,550 is referred to.
