Abstract

Polythene is heat-stabilized by addition of 0.005 to 5 per cent of an acetone-diphenylamine condensation product, to which diphenyl-p-phenylene diamine may be added. Incorporation may be effected by hot-milling or by adding the condensation product to a solution or dispersion of polythene in water or an organic solvent, e.g. xylene and evaporating the solvent. Pigments, fillers, paraffin wax, rubber, hydrogenated rubber, polyisobutylene, polystyrene or polybutadiene may be added. The condensation product may be prepared by heating acetone (2 mols.) with diphenylamine (1 mol.) in the presence of hydriodic acid in an autoclave and removing water and excess acetone by further heating in an open vessel. The product is a dark viscous fluid or a solid resin. Specifications 471,590, 571,943 and 578,584 are referred to.
