Abstract
Epoxy resins prepared as described in Specification 774,582, by styrenating an oil-insoluble novolak resin and etherifying the product with a haloepoxyalkane or a compound producing same under the reaction conditions are cured and cross-linked by heating them with a primary aliphatic mono-amines, e.g. propylamine, n-butylamine, dodecylamine or stearylamine. The amine is preferably added in the proportions of one primary amine group to every two epoxy groups. The compositions will cure at room temperatures in two to three days or in a few hours at 100-2000 DEG C. The usual modifying agents, plasticizers, solvents, fillers and pigments may be added to the compositions. In examples, an epoxidized styrenated novolak resin prepared as described in Example (9) of Specification 774,582, is dissolved in "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark), the solution containing 60 per cent by weight of solvent was mixed (a) with C18H37NH2 in amine/epoxy group ratios of 1 : 4,1; 2,1 : 1, 2 : 1 and the respective mixtures gelled in (1) 9 minutes, (2) 9 minutes, (3) 6 hours, (4) more than 8 hours; (b) with C14H29NH2 in ratios 1 : 2 and 1 : 1, the gelling times being 6.5 minutes and 3.5 hours; (c) with C10H21NH2 in ratios 1 : 2 and 1 : 1 the gelling times being 6.5 minutes and 1 hour. In Example 9 an aliphatic amine derived from coconut oil and consisting essentially of dodecylamine was used.
