Abstract

Epoxy resins derived from phenol-formaldehyde novolak resins mixed with primary aliphatic monoamines cure at room temperatures over a period of 2-3 days and in a few hours at 100-200 DEG C. Monoamines specified are propylamine, n-butylamine, dodecylamine and stearylamine. A phenol novolak was prepared by refluxing 100 parts phenol, 70 parts 37 per cent formaldehyde and 0.6 parts oxalic acid until the mixture clouded and then for a further 20 minutes. The resin was isolated by distillation under vacuum and sufficient epichlorhydrin added to give a 65 per cent solution of novolak resin; 1317 parts of the solution were mixed with 2515 parts epichlorhydrin and heated under reflux with 21 parts water and 80 parts NaOH; further amounts of NaOH being added until 368 parts had been added in all. After refluxing and vacuum distillation chlorbenzene was added to remove the NaCl and the solvent was distilled off to recover the resin. A 60 per cent solution of the resin in methyl ethyl ketone was mixed with (1) 7 parts of C18H31NH2 dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone and the solution thinned in benzene was used as a lacquer for stoving metal panels at 135 DEG C.; (2) and (3) with an amine sold under the name "Armeen"; (4) with an amine derived from coconut oil.
