Abstract
571,986. Closures for sheet metal containers. O'DELL, A. E. (United Steel Barrel Co.). Dec. 18, 1943, No. 21275. [Class 21] [Also in Groups II and XXII] The wall 10 surrounding the filling opening of a sheet metal container such as a steel drum, barrel or tank is formed with a flange 12 with keying tongues 13 extending transversely therefrom, and a bushing 14 is cast in situ around the parts 12, 13. In use, a gasket 22 is placed on the rim 16 of the bushing so that a screw bung may make a fluid-tight joint. The cast bushing is of lower melting point metal than the container, a suitable alloy being zinc 90-95 per cent, aluminium 5 per cent, copper 1-4 per cent, magnesium .01-.05 per cent. The bung may be sealed by a thin rotatable metal cap 30 engaged with the closure by means of a metal strip 33 with prongs 34 engaging the underside of the bung head. Alternatively, the bung may be wire sealed. The moulding may be effected with the aid of a sectional mould placed in the filling opening, molten metal being poured, forced or injected under high pressure into it. The container surface to which the bushing is applied may be plated with cadmium or zinc.
