Abstract
571,720. Gun mountings. VESELY, J. Aug. 5, 1941, No. 9959. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] A spherical turret for use on vehicles such as armoured cars, carries one or more guns fixed thereto and is movable as a whole for elevating and training purposes by a gunner within the turret who occupies a seat fixed to the turret and uses a single control lever to bring selectively into operation power means for moving the turret in elevation and/or traverse. In the form shown, a pair of guns 9 are fixed, with provision for initial adjustments, to a spherical turret 1 mounted on elevational trunnions 2 in a traversing ring 4 suspended from which by arms 7 is a platform carrying the gearing for operating the turret. The drive is by power through a shaft 22 carrying bevel driving wheels 24, 24<1> into frictional engagement with which a driven wheel 25 for elevating and/or a driven wheel 25<1> for training may be brought by operating a single lever 42 within the turret. The lever is operated by a gunner occupying an adjustable seat 13 and the lever is connected bv Bowden or other wires to arms 26, 26<1>, Fig. supporting the wheels 25, 25<1> and movable on a shaft 27. Chain gears connect the wheels 25, 25<1> to irreversible worms which drive the turret. The turret is provided with a sighting aperture 16 fitted with a sighting ring 17 maintained horizontal, during elevation of the turret and guns, by crank mechanism, a shaft of which passes through the trunnion 2.' The sight is viewed by the gunner who uses a head rest 43. In case of emergency, the turret can be rotated by hand gear connected to the shaft 22.
