Abstract
586,117. Aircraft gun mountings. NASH, A. G. FRAZER-. Jan. 27, 1941, No. 1059. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] Relates to aircraft gun turrets in which the gunner is positioned within the fuselage with the guns located in a part of the turret extending below the fuselage, hydraulic elevating and training means being provided for the gun and periscopic sights for the gunner. According to the invention, a periscope mirror sight is employed, the upper mirror being fixed and the lower mirror being moved by gearing through half the angle of gun elevation. In the form shown, a power-operated turret 1 rotates on a ring mounting 5, 6 and protrudes below the fuselage for the downward fire of a pair of guns mounted on a trunnion shaft 10. Elevation is effected by hydraulic jacks 13 and training by a hydraulic motor 14, the supply of pressure liquid being controlled as described in Specification 586,113 by handles 16 on a column 18 operated by a gunner occupying a seat 3. The gunner uses a periscopic sight comprising a tube 22 fixed to the turret in an inclined position, the upper end of the tube having a head rest 50, an eyepiece 24 and a fixed mirror 23, and the lower end of the tube carrying, on a hinge 27, a mirror which is moved by links 29, 30, sector 32, and adjustable flexible band 34 through one half the angle moved through by the gun in elevation. Ammunition is supplied from boxes 49.
