Abstract
483,847. Gun turrets. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., LOBELLE, M. J. O., and VOSS, E. May 29, 1935, No. 15647. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] Relates to a rotary turret mounting g, Fig. 1, for multiple machine guns a mounted for elevation on the cranked part of a shaft c so that the barrels intersect the shaft and recoil loads pass through the shaft bearings, each of the guns being independently adjustable to permit of converging fire. The mounting is stated to be applicable to aircraft or other vehicles and to submarines. According to the invention, the turret g is mounted on a central telescopic member j which can be raised and lowered with respect to a fixed support k, the member j carrying a structure e which supports the elevation shaft c and also a lower ring f that runs within a fixed housing h to guide the turret during its vertical and rotary motions. In the form shown, the aircraft turret is raised and lowered by hydraulic pressure acting between the telescoping parts j, k and controlled by a pedal p with the aid of a balance spring m. The gunner, using a seat n and foot supports o, views the target through sights y and, by means of a handle (not shown), controls a reversible infinitely-variable speed gear q driven by a constant speed electric motor r as described in Specification 457,226, [Group XXIV], This gear elevates the guns by worm shaft s and sector u and trains the turret by a telescoping shaft v and spur-gearing w, x. Links 11, 13, 14 connect the sight with the crank-shaft c for synchronous movement with the guns. For independent adjustment, Fig. 4, each of the guns a is mounted on a member b integral with the crank-shaft c by means of elevational pivots 19 and training pivots 20. Elevational adjustment is effected by rotating a spindle 35 carrying eccentrics 33, and training adjustment in guides 25 is obtained by rotating a screw 31. The turret is enclosed by armoured or transparent panels 44, Fig. 7, and the gun slot is lined with spring steel or like bristles 45 to exclude draughts.
