Abstract
560,688. Aircraft gun mountings. NASH, A. G. FRAZER-. June 6, 1940, No. 9912. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXI] Relates to manually-operated gun mountings for aircraft in which the guns are situated in a nacelle 27 below the fuselage and below the gunner who is positioned within the fuselage, the guns being carried on platforms 3 trainable about pivots A on a frame 1 elevatable about trunnions 2 and the guns being aimed by a single hand-operated member. According to the invention, the assembly of nacelle and guns is provided with means to jettison it in an emergency, and the guns are aimed by a control column 4 extending from the frame 1 to the remote gunner who occupies a seat 18, the column being directly inclined or rocked to elevate the guns, and axially rotated to train the guns through a mechanical linkage or gearing. In the form shown, the column consists of a tube fitted with periscopic mirror sights 14, 15, and handles 11a foldable against the column are provided for manipulating the column, the guns being fired through Bowden gear 53 by triggers 52 on the handles. For training, the column is connected to the gun platforms 3 by arms 8 and a crossbeam 10. The guns are mounted on the platforms with provision for initial adjustments in elevation and training by means of screws. The guns are fed with ammunition from belts passing over spools 55 to chutes 56. Shaped stops 47 are provided to limit tilting movements of the column in certain positions of training and prevent endangering fire. The nacelle 27 is supported below the fuselage by fastening devices adapted to be readily released for jettisoning. The rear fastening bolts 36, Fig. 2, are carried by toggle-levers 35 released by a pull-cord 42 and the side locks 29 are operated by links 30 when a shaft 31 is rotated by a rear handle 32. The gunner's seat 18, mounted on pivoted arms 19, is supported by toggle-lever struts 23, the toggle joints being readily broken by handles 24 to enable the seat to swing down to inoperative position.
