Abstract

548,302. Searchlight mountings. SMALLWOOD, P. March 17, 1941. No. 3604. [Class 75 (iii)] [Also in Group XXI] Guns, searchlights and other projectors are directed by a combined elevating and training movement, the projector being mounted for elevation on a planet wheel which meshes during training with a sun-wheel and pure training being effected by bodily rotation of the sun and planet wheels about the axis of the sun-wheel. In the form shown, two machine guns 16 are for elevation geared by planetary-pinions 15 on shafts 14 to a sun-wheel 8 fixed to a shaft 7 upstanding from a platform 3. The gun trunnions are carried by a frame 12 on a turntable 9 rotatable with respect to the platform 3 on a roller race 10, this rotation causing automatic elevation of the guns through the medium of the sun-and-planet gears. The platform 3 is mounted for bodily rotation on a roller race 23 and for tilting on a transverse axis by gearing 5, 4: Pointers, movable over graduated arcs, indicate the angular movements about the various axes. The application of the invention to a battery of four guns is also described.
