Abstract

571,476. Excavating. GAR WOOD INDUSTRIES, Inc. Aug. 10, 1943, No. 12908. Convention date, Oct. 28, 1942. [Class 68 (i)] In a scraper having a bowl adapted to receive material from a cutter and to be raised to discharge the material, the bowl includes members hinged together transversely of the scraper and such that the angle between the load-supporting surfaces of the members is increased as the bowl is raised. A cable-controlled scraper comprises a main frame carried by rear wheels 12 and built of longitudinal box members 10, front transverse box member 11, rear transverse box members and side members 28 ; pivoted at 18 to the main frame are side arms 16 of a draft member 17 supported by swivelling wheels 24 with a draw-bar 26. A cutter 30 is mounted on a transverse member 32 fixed to the sides 28 ; the bowl comprises a bottom 38 and a back 36 of box section pivoted together at 40, the bottom being also pivoted to the member 32, and the back being pivoted at 46 to a transverse member 44 carried by side arms 48 pivoted at 50 to the main frame. A front gate 56 is fixed to side arms 58 also pivoted to the main frame at 50. A cable 70 passes over guide pulleys 72, 74, and over sheaves 64, 76, carried by the draft member 17 and main frame respectively ; hauling on the cable 70 tilts the main frame about wheels 12 to raise the bowl from digging to carrying position. A further cable 84 passes over guide pulleys 86, 88 and over sheaves 82, 60, 54 carried respectively by the main frame, the front gate and the member 44, hauling on the cable 84 first opening the front gate and then raising the bowl to discharge position ; during raising of the bowl, the angle between the bottom 38 and back 36 increases, reaching substantially two right angles in the full discharge position.
