Abstract

567,244. Excavating. McGEE, L. T. May, 7, 1943, No. 7281. [Class 68 (i)] A scraper for excavating and carrying earth comprises a frame 1 supported on wheels 4 and adjustably and pivotally connected by a link 3 to a draw bar A pivoted to a tractor H and adapted to be raised and lowered through links L ; the scraper bowl 5 is pivoted to the frame 1 at 6 and tends to swing down rearwardly, such movement being limited by a hydraulic shock absorber 9. A front apron 12 is carried by arms 11 also pivoted at 6 and having their downward movement limited by a cross beam 14 ; a cable 16 is attached to the apron 12 and passes over sheave 15 and floating pulley 17 to an anchorage, the floating pulley 17 being connected adjustably, through cable 19 and chain 21 to an arm 22 on the tractor, whereby when the frame 1 is lowered to place the bowl 5 in digging position, the apron 12 uncovers the front of the bowl, while when the frame 1 is raised to move the bowl to carrying position, the apron closes the front of the bowl. On each side of the bowl is pivoted at its upper end a plate 28 with a socket 26 and a roller track 27, and below the plate 28 is a fixed flange 33 on which a roller track section 31 is adjustable ; by means of a pin 29 engaging either of two holes 30, the plate 28 may be fixed with its track 27 aligned either with the flange 33 or the track section 31. Arms 23 are pivoted to the frame 1 and controlled by springs 24 and cables 38 connected to levers 35, the arms 23 carrying rollers 25 adapted to engage the sockets 26 to hold the bowl 5 in scraping and digging position relative to the frame 1, or, when the bowl has tilted to dumping position, to engage spaces 32 between the plates 28 and tracks 31 to hold the bowl for levelling the spoil. If the plates 28 are fixed with their tracks 27 aligned with the flanges 33, the bowl 5 automatically returns to the position shown after discharging its load.
