Abstract

571,444. Pile fabrics. VICTOR, V. A. Sept. 27, 1943, No. 15810. [Class 142 (iv)] Pile-forming material is fed by endless belts 23, 24 to a cutting device 31, the cut tufts are gripped by jaws 56, 57 and are swung with the jaws to a position spaced from an intermittentlyfed fabric 17 having a cementitions coating, and are lowered in substantially vertical position so as to embed the lower ends of the tufts into the coating. The fabric 17 is drawn through the machine by a card-wheel and passes over a block 100 so shaped that at the point of application of the tufts the direction of the fabric changes abruptly so that more room is provided for the tuft about to be inserted. The final downward movement of the tufts is timed to occur when the fabric is stationary. The jaws 56, 57 are carried by arms 58 pivoted about a rocker arm shaft 59 and are closed to grip a tuft by a screw 90 mounted upon the cutter 31. A lever 78 actuated by a solenoid switch 76 is provided for opening the jaws when the tuft has been applied to the fabric 17. The pile fabric passes from the card-wheel to an oven or other heating apparatus in which the solvent of the cementitious material is evaporated, and from thence may pass to a vulcanizing apparatus. Finally, the pile fabric may be combed and brushed. The pile material may be wool, alpaca, cashmere, hemp, cotton, linen or silk or any artificial fibre such as viscose rayon or spun glass. The cementitious material may be a solution or dispersion of rubber, synthetic rubber, a synthetic resin or a cellulose derivative.
