Class 120(iii) Heavy denier yarn suitable for the production of carpeting, heavy upholstery fabrics and similar textile materials, are made by assembling continuous filaments in parallel and untwisted relation to form a tow having a total denier of 1,000-10,000, crimping all the filaments in the tow, and then applying a twist to the tow of 2-12 turns per inch, the filaments being maintained in parallel relation and extending along the length of the tow during crimping and until the twist is applied. Each filament which may have a denier of 3-40 may have a basis of an organic derivative of cellulose, and the tow may be flattened to form a ribbon of continuous filaments before crimping. The yarn of the invention may be plied with one or more other components of the same or different character, e.g. it may be plied with from 1-7 other yarns which, or some of which, have the same or a reverse twist and are formed from natural fibres such as wool or cotton or from the same or different artificial fibres.
