Abstract
570,700. Promoting water circulation in steam boilers. THORNYCROFT & CO., Ltd., J. I., WATSON, H. J., and SHARPE, H. E. Nov. 10, 1943, No. 18678. [Class 123 (ii)] In a water-tube steam boiler with an upper steam and water drum 3 connected by groups of steam generating tubes 4 and one or more downcomer pipes 5 to a lower water drum or drums 1, feedwater is supplied to the boiler through a pipe 6 which is arranged within the upper drum and terminates in one or more nozzles 8 which direct the incoming feedwater downwards through a venturi tube forming part of the downcomer pipe or pipes, to cause the pressure of water in the lower drum or drums, as compared with the pressure in the upper drum, to rise above that due to the static head. in the form shown, one downcomer pipe 5, arranged outside the path of the furnace gases, connects the upper drum 3 to the centre of each lower drum 1. From the bottom of each downcomer pipe two horizontal perforated ducts 10 extend in opposite directions within each lower drum. Baffles 9 prevent the passage of steam bubbles into the downcomer pipes.
