Abstract

570,161. Fuel injectors. C.A.V., Ltd., and NICOLLS, W. E. W. Dec. 17, 1943, No. 21231. [Class 7 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In an injection nozzle of the kind in which the delivery of the fuel is controlled by a spring-loaded valve of plunger-like form and axially slida, ble in the body of the nozzle, the valve acts as a pump to supply a second liquid to the cylinder or elsewhere. Liquid fuel supplied under pressure to an inlet b traverses a passage h to a chamber g surrounding a shouldered portion of a plunger-like valve f, the outer end of which seats on a conical surface d in the body a of the injection nozzle to close the spraying orifice c until pressure of the fuel on the shoulder lifts the valve against the pressure of a spring i. An axial passage in the valve connects the nozzle, with the hollow interior thereof which is separated from the chamber containing the spring i by a ball valve j. When the plunger valve # lifts, a plug n on its inner end displaces a second liquid from the chamber of the spring i past the ball valve into the cylinder, the return stroke of the valve f under the action of the spring i opening a second ball valve p at, the further end of the spring chamber to admit more of the second liquid thereto. As shown in Fig. 2, the plunger valve f acts through a thrust rod t to displace a plunger w to circulate a second liquid past ball valves p, j in an external system. In a further modification, the underside of the plunger w contacts the second liquid and the valve spring i operates on the forcing stroke.
