Abstract
569,919. Springs. TELEPATENTS, Ltd., BRIDSON, E. P., TOWNSEND, S. E., and LEVANE, R. May 13, 1943, No. 7677. Drawings to Specification. [Class 108 (iii)] Relates to a helical compression or extension spring of the open coil type, to a close-coiled helical extension spring, and to a torsion bar spring to which the load is applied externally at either or both ends. According to the invention, the spring is formed hollow so that its stiffness may be varied by the application of internal fluid pressure or may be set by having fluid under pressure sealed in its interior. The spring, which may be of steel, copper-base alloy, or other material, may be connected to a regulatable source of fluid pressure and gas or liquid may be supplied by a pump, gas cylinder, accumulator or by a valve system. A number of springs may be controlled independently or in sets and the stiffness varied manually or automatically.
