Abstract
569,650. Clutches. TECALEMIT, Ltd., and LE CLAIR, C. C. S. Nov. 29, 1943, No. 19946. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group II] A centrifugal bowl, such as is driven at varying high speeds by an aircraft engine, for cleansing lubricating oil, has a clutch which allows the driving means to overrun the bowl when the speed is accelerating, the bowl gradually picking up speed ; a further clutch is provided to allow the bowl to overrun its driving means when the latter is de-celerating. Various types of slipping clutches may be used. A centrifugal bowl 4 is driven from the engine cam-shaft through a hollow driving-shaft 5 having a gear-wheel 6, and is supported on a hollow spindle 9. Oil is supplied to the bowl from an engine pump by way of an inlet 11 and ports 12. The driving clutch for the bowl comprises a flange 14 and friction discs 15, 16 of fibre, fabric or the like. A " loose clutch " plate 17 may slide axially and runs on a flange 13 of the bearing 7. An upper " fixed clutch " plate 18 is arranged on the spindle 9 and carries a number of pins 19 which project through holes 20 in the plate 17. The pressure on the discs 15, 16, due to springs 21, may be varied by adjusting nuts 23. When the resistance to rotation exceeds a predetermined torque, the clutch will slip. The second clutch comprises a boss 24 having tapered notches 30 containing spring-pressed rollers 31 which drive a gearwheel 27 and thus the bowl 4. When the driving speed falls off suddenly, the rollers 31 no longer drive the bowl 4. The gear 27 meshes with a number of pinions 33 which are integral with, or attached to, gear-wheels 35. The latter drive a gear 36 on a sleeve 37 attached to the bowl 4. Cleaned oil spills over the edge of the rim 42 into the casing 1, and passes out through a port 3. Sludge is removed by a scoop 43 which is pivotable about a sludge outlet 44. When being used it occupies the dottedline position. The gear ratio of bowl to driving spindle 9 is preferably 4 : 1. The freewheel clutch 30, 31 may be incorporated within another member of the gear train, instead of in 27.
